The Silver Decadrachm Of Syracuse

The Decadracm Of Syracuse

465 BC: This is one of the magnificent series of "Demareteion" coins minted during the "Classical Age" of Greece, the age of Pericles and the Parthenon. The coin weighs 42.1 gm (1.35 troy oz.). The name "Demareteion" is modern, used to signify the unknown artist, probably Athenian, who designed the coin. This is one of the most beautiful coins ever struck, and amazingly, it is almost 2500 years old.
